Overview of the Cornea
The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It plays a crucial role in focusing light onto the retina, allowing us to see clearly. As the eye's outermost layer, the cornea also serves as a protective barrier against dirt, germs, and other particles.
Types of Corneal Conditions
-
Corneal Ulcers (Keratitis):
Corneal ulcers are a type of inflammation of the cornea. They are typically caused by infection, but can also be caused by injury.
With immediate treatment, most ulcers can be treated without vision loss. But if the infection is left untreated or is too severe, ulcers can permanently harm your eyes.
- Diabetic Retinopathy A complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina.
- Normal-Tension Glaucoma: In this type, optic nerve damage occurs even though the eye pressure is not very high.
-
Secondary Glaucoma: This type results from another eye condition, injury, or medication.
Can lead to vision impairment and blindness if not managed. -
Retinal Detachment: Occurs when the retina separates from its underlying tissue.
Requires immediate medical intervention to prevent permanent vision loss. -
Retinal Vein Occlusion: Blockage of veins in the retina, similar to a stroke.
Can result in sudden vision loss. - Retinal Tears: Small breaks in the retina that can lead to detachment if untreated.
Symptoms of Retinal Conditions
- Blurred or distorted vision.
- Sudden appearance of floaters or flashes of light.
- Dark or empty areas in the field of vision.
- Difficulty seeing fine details.
- Sudden loss of vision.
Treatment Options
-
Laser Therapy: Used to seal retinal tears and treat abnormal blood vessels.
Effective in managing conditions like diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears. -
Vitrectomy: A surgical procedure to remove the vitreous gel from the eye.
Often performed to repair retinal detachments or remove vitreous hemorrhage. -
Intravitreal Injections: Medications injected directly into the eye.
Used to treat conditions like AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion.
